One day a Waimea based crop farmer was searching for water on his own property and saw an opportunity when he realised other local farmers were needing the same thing. Since starting in 1965 Waimea Drilling Company has gone from strength to strength. At that time Waimea Drilling Company was completing relatively shallow drilling to a depth of around 30-50 metres largely in the Wairau, Motueka and Waimea Plains. In 1982 the company made the move into deep drilling when kiwifruit farming was starting to gain momentum in the region and water in Nelson’s Moutere formation required drilling to greater depths.
Today the company is owned by Brendan Higgins, a long term employee with over 20 years experience. Waimea Drilling Company 2023 Ltd carries on the proud tradition of finding water for a variety of clients including farmers, vineyards, horticultural operations, lifestyle block owners and more.

Waimea Drilling Company employs an expert team and operates a drilling rig with a 20 tonne drill rig assembly. The company has a detailed knowledge of piezometers and investigative drilling including down bore flow rates. Customers include domestic clients, dairy farmers, apple growers, district councils and the fishing and timber industries. Waimea Drilling Company has now completed over 7000 wells.

The NZDF represents the drilling sector across New Zealand and works to support industry development through recognised training, experience and competency standards. Through the Drillers Registration programme, drilling professionals are independently assessed against key criteria to provide clients with confidence that they are working with qualified and experienced operators.
Registration recognises a combination of industry knowledge, practical experience and ongoing training, including health and safety qualifications, first aid certification, appropriate driving licences and industry endorsements, proven experience and professional references.
